A Night in Venice
The premiere of Johann Strauss II’s operetta, "A Night in Venice," took place on October 3, 1883, in Berlin at the Friedrich-Wilhelm City Theater (later known as Woltersdorff Theater).
In this Austrian operetta, Strauss draws from the traditions of the Italian opera buffa, where common people—servants and peasants—typically outwit their masters or nobles. In a most extraordinary way, the "King of Waltz" himself invites you to the famous Venetian Carnival!
The masquerade ball on the streets of Venice serves as the atmospheric backdrop for a light-hearted vaudeville comedy filled with brawls and romantic escapades. The self-satisfied playboy, Duke Urbino, arrives in Venice for the masquerade with the intention of seducing the beautiful Barbara, the wife of local senator Delacqua...
How this masquerade will end, the audience will witness firsthand, but Strauss has given his loyal fans much more than just musical entertainment. In "A Night in Venice," he masterfully blends cultural traditions from various European countries: Austrian and Italian dances, seamlessly weaving into the operetta’s musical fabric the diverse melodies he encountered during his travels. Strauss breaks down the barrier between stage and audience, making us all unwittingly welcomed guests and participants in the thrilling spectacle.
"A Night in Venice" is an endless stream of pleasures and wild fun.
Now, this brilliant comedy will grace our stage as well.
So, see you at the carnival!
