Chasing Two Hares Odesa 2024

Chasing Two Hares

A classic Ukrainian comedy by M. Starytsky, inspired by I. Nechuy-Levytsky's play, this is a farcical comedy about the eternal theme of a "successful marriage." The groom, as is often the case, seems "desirable" at first glance, but in reality, he's a scoundrel and a liar. The brides... well, they have their flaws too. Though written over a hundred years ago, this story is as relevant as ever. Fortune seekers looking for easy gains through marriage haven't disappeared, and they won't. Ignorance and foolishness continue to hide behind a mask of sophistication. Gossips keep spreading rumors, replacing real values with fabricated ones. How familiar this all is to modern society!

The Odesa Academic Theatre of Musical Comedy first brought this story to the stage in 1955. At that time, the role of Pronya was performed by Yevheniya Dembska, who created a vibrant satirical character! Her partner was Emmanuil Liberro. The production by I. Grinshpun was a massive success with audiences.

And now, 65 years later, Chasing Two Hares is back in the theater's repertoire. Beautiful music by V. Ilyin and V. Lukashov with easily recognizable musical quotes, colorful language, humor, and brilliant performances — everything you need for theatrical enjoyment!

A musical comedy in 2 acts based on the work of M. Starytsky
Libretto by D. Shevtsov
